“NDAA Compliant” is a term that has made its way into the security industry’s vernacular in recent months, but what exactly does this mean?

NDAA is an acronym standing for “National Defense Authorization Act.” Officially known as the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 (NDAA 2019), the act is a United States federal law which specifies the budget, expenditures, and policies of the U.S. Department of Defense for fiscal year 2019. It bans the federal government from purchasing equipment from certain Chinese suppliers due to security concerns, namely Huawei and ZTE. It also bans the federal government from purchasing any surveillance equipment, for the purposes of national security, from Dahua Technology, Hytera and Hikvision. This information is contained in a specific part of the law known as “NDAA Section 889 Part B.”

What does this mean for the security professional?

It is important for installers to know which applications require compliance with this act to keep up with regulations. Any installations done in the public sector will need to use NDAA compliant products. These products pose no threat to national security and are considered safe by the government to use in public buildings such as schools, government offices and courts. Additionally, previous installs that used banned products are expected to have to be done over to comply with the law.

As the security industry continues to adapt to these regulations, Speco Technologies is here to help.
