Sound the Alarm! Improve Building Safety by Alerting to Unauthorized Use or Urgent Situations

The sound of an alarm alerting provokes mixed emotions, depending on who is questioned. An office employee may be irritated at the strobes and noise as the commotion interrupts a strategic meeting or their concentration from completing a task. A mischievous young student bored in class might consider the alert a miracle of distraction and freedom.

As security takes on increased importance for buildings, owners and operators need to take the necessary steps to create a secure and safe environment for occupants.

With limited resources and funds, a strategic approach is required to safeguard staff, visitors, students, and property from the threat of violence, burglary, fire, misuse and vandalism.

Public Safety

One of the most essential points of protection in a building is being able to sound an audible and visible alarm to alert individuals that the building they inhabit is in danger. The potential threat could pose the need to alert to suspicious behavior, when an emergency occurs or is noticed, or when severe weather is approaching.

Since the recent pandemic, visitors of facilities are much more spread out throughout buildings and campuses. The distance makes it extremely important for facilities and properties to increase the visual and audible coverage of their premises.

Alarms are designed and engineered to provide occupants—and in some cases, site security and emergency personnel—with an early warning that allows them to safely act during an emergency or concerning situation.

Mass Notification

Mass notification is a powerful way to enhance the protection of all buildings and is the ultimate tool for communication and management of emergent situations.

A fire alarm system is necessary, but it only instigates a building evacuation. This is appropriate in the event of a fire, but not for an active shooter, severe weather, or a hazardous material spill. In those instances, evacuation is likely to place personnel and visitors in harm’s way.

Alarms and strobes can help save lives by allowing building occupants to receive quick and clear notification that a concerning situation is happening around them. In the event of an emergency, these essential devices can send out urgent warnings over a multi-zone system, helping to decrease possible tragedy and harm.

The Solution

Improve building safety with STI’s extensive range of alarms and strobes. They help prevent possible concerning issues from escalating, or theft and misuse of important security devices from occurring.

STI’s Select-Alert mini controller sirens/strobes alert to urgent situations, unauthorized use, theft and vandalism of essential devices and doors. The combination of alarm and flashing LEDs is for wall, ceiling, or cabinet mount, allowing them to be easily noticed and recognized as an audible and visual notification of warning. They are offered in six colors, with 32 sounds, and eight flash patterns. Water-resistant models are available to help protect the alerts against the elements when installed in exposed locations.

The highly effective Exit Stopper® door alarm helps prevent unauthorized exits and entries of unsupervised doors, back doors or exits that must be left unlocked for safety purposes. The inexpensive standalone alarm flashes and gives an audible warning when activated. It mounts on the top, right, left or next to almost any door. Provided with labels in twenty languages, users can add a warning in a second language. A key operated override will silence the alarm and allow authorized use of exits when required.

Theft Stopper® battery operated alarm helps protect extinguishers, emergency chairs, life rings and more from theft or misuse. The alarm mounts easily next to any item. When the protected item is moved, the steel cable pulls free from the device. The self-contained siren emits, drawing immediate attention to the area. The Theft Stopper does not restrict legitimate use and leaves the guarded item accessible for emergencies.

Important Note

Always remember, if an announcement is not communicated or posted beforehand, never assume an alarm is false or that the building’s system is being tested. Promote safety and handle all alarms and warnings as if they are real.
